Man, oh man, oh man… how things change.

My initial concept for the dresser has changed. Kind of a bit a lot. If that makes sense.

  1. Took the giant bird off the front and replaced it with a distant flying flock of feathered friends (sorry… I know I could have said birds, but once alliteration starts you really have to follow thru.)
  2. Abandoned the Emerald and Greyed Jade in favour of following my “BlackGold” theme. I think having collections is a better idea au moment.
  3. I had initially intended to have the interiors of the drawers printed, but since I’m going with the black and gold flavour, I will now just cover the interiors with matte black and and have the feathers cut from a brushed gold on top (laminated for good measure so that the feathers wont lift during the course of regular use).
  4. Front pulls have been eliminated. Again, this might change as soon as actual construction begins.

MALM Concept 2

I’ll catch you up in the next and final (?) installment of the Life and Times of a MALM Dresser.

The MALM dresser and bed were my very first independent purchases. I bought them to coincide with my first attempt at living on my own, away from my parents and their protective, claustrophobic clutches.

Needless to say, I was crawling back home a little over a year later, begging for shelter, fully aware of how hard living on your own truly is! (It’s amazing how not having a proper budget in mind will screw you over… my downfall was being unprepared for the grocery budget… forgot to account for non-food items… so silly.)

But my MALM dresser stayed by my side. He never faltered. The bed, well she was unable to withstand the rigours of being re-assembled multiple times. She will be missed. Not MALM, the dresser tho… no, not he. He has lasted the test of time.

And so, in honour of his lasting ability he will be remodeled and re-invented. He will be given a stunning makeover the likes have never been seen before (altho the likes probably have been seen before, I’m just being hyperbolic).

MALM DresserThe original base of the dresser is IKEA’s black-brown, but in moving home the last time, instead of removing the drawers, we taped them in place. Bad idea. When we removed the tape, little bits of the varnish came off. If IKEA sells the black-brown varnish I will do touch ups. If not, I will sand down and re-paint a full black.

Otherwise tho, I really wanna do this up right. I’m going to invest a little bit of money in buying quality materials for this.

The drawers’ interiors will be fully decked out and the front of the drawers will have pulls (One thing I hate is the lack of pulls).

So here is my concept art:

I’m going to start on the dresser on Monday, since it’s still at my parents’ place.

Sadly, as much as I love him, he didn’t fit in with my current decor.

I await to continue this saga.

Bye for now! 🙂
